Source Water Protection in State college

We are fortunate to have very clean water here in State College, due largely to the vigilance of our water providers and the dedication of our citizens to the health of the local environment.

However, because we withdraw from a karst limestone aquifer, water quality could deteriorate rapidly if we are not careful.  Therefore, it is crucial to continue to understand the sources of our water, monitor the quality of that water, and work for its protection.  To this end, all of the source water protection partners have volunteered to participate in the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Source Water Protection Technical Assistance Program.

Through this program, each of the Partners has developed an individualized Source Water Protection Plan.  These plans call for the designation of Source Water Protection Zones, and for a careful assessment of the potential threats to source water and an investigation of practices that could help mitigate these threats.
